Join us for this February’s Chicago Cartoon Club meeting! We will be screening Katsuhrio Otomo’s 1988 Japanese animated cyberpunk action film AKIRA.
Set in a dystopian and futuristic 2019, clandestine army activities threaten the war torn city of Neo-Tokyo when a mysterious being with powerful psychic abilities escapes his prison and inadvertently draws a violent motorcycle gang into a heinous web of experimentation. As a result, a biker with a twisted mind embarks on a path of war, seeking revenge against a society what once called him weak.
AKIRA became a hugely popular cult film around the world, and is widely considered to be a landmark in feature-length animation and spearheading the popularization of anime outside Japan. This film also features the infamous “AKIRA slide” — regarded as one of the most iconic anime scenes of all time, widely imitated and referenced in many works of animation, film and television.
