This April, we are pleased to host local Chicago dyer Naima Bond’s beautiful fiber line, Sister Ananse Yarn, for our monthly trunk show!

Naima Bond is a Visual Artist born, raised, and currently living in Chicago. She is a graduate of Oberlin College where she earned a BFA in Studio Art, with a Concentration in African American Studies, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she studied Graduate Painting and Drawing.

Naima is particularly interested in using vibrant, super saturated hues in all of her artwork and yarn colorways. Inspiration comes from many different places for Naima, mainly from the Natural World and Biological Sciences, Popular Culture, TV and Movies, and Black History.

The seeds of Sister Ananse Yarn began in 2020 when Naima took a workshop on hand dyeing luxury yarn, and fell in love with the process and results! Not long after, Naima opened The Art of Naima Bond, which includes Sister Ananse Yarn as well as jewelry, small works of art, embroidery and more.

The name "Sister Ananse Yarn" (pronounced "Uh-Nan-Say" or  "Uh-Nan-See") came from the spider deity of African and Caribbean mythology , Ananse. He is sometimes a trickster,  sometimes a wise helper. In the Andinkra alphabet, he is depicted as a 7-armed asterisk.

Please join us for a special and hyper-local trunk show!

Mark your calendars and prepare to be enchanted as welcome back the magnificent hand-dyed yarns of Stephanie Buford, the creative genius behind Deep Dyed Yarns! With an extensive range of exquisite fibers and vibrant hues, Deep Dyed Yarns offers a kaleidoscope of possibilities for all your knitting and crochet adventures.

Deep Dyed specializes in fully-saturated spinning fibers and yarns, in a wide range of breeds. Deep Dyed has been a shop favorite for years, and we are always excited to welcome their beautiful fibers into our space to share with our community.

About Stephanie:

Stephanie’s obsession with fiber started way back in 1997 while sitting next to a delightful woman on a British Airways flight from London Heathrow to NYC who was knitting a baby blanket. She asked a few questions, came home, bought yarn, and taught herself to knit through many, many trials and tribulations!

After many years and quite a few terrible finished objects, the needles and yarn finally clicked. Which spurred an interest in how yarn is made;  a drop spindle was bought and then a wheel;  a plethora of yarns were made.  Such a plethora there was no way little old Stephanie could knit them all!  Yarns were stacking up in the corners and had to find new homes where they would be loved, used, and cherished. They were listed online and to her delight...  ALL SOLD!

Stephanie bought more fiber, taught herself to dye it, spun it up, and thought maybe, just maybe people might like to buy fiber too.  This got her to thinking: perhaps she should try to dye and sell mill spun yarn? From that, she has snow-balled and is so grateful for everyone who has supported her throughout the years.

Kat has also been a musician most of her life, making music with friends and family and songwriting since age 12. Kat began dyeing after she took up spinning in her twenties and couldn’t find “just” the right colorway she wanted: Enter powdered turmeric and some alpaca roving, and the rest is the colors you see now see from WKF. Nearly a decade later, she is still playing with color, creating color, making music, spinning, and knitting in Traverse City, Michigan with her husband, Steve and their teens, Liam & Sadie (as well as 2 dogs and 3 cats - much to their annoyance, are NOT allowed in the studio). The business name came from a phrase that Kat says quite often “Sure! Why not?”
