Nina started to be involved in the local yarn community where she has found so many friends that made her feel more at home here in Illinois. She has always been an artistic person so it is to no surprise that Nina eventually wanted to dye her own yarn. That’s how Just Nina started in 2020.

Nina believes in the power of ‘yarning’ to bring people together and create beautiful, handmade creations. Her vision is to inspire and empower ‘yarners’ of all levels with quality yarn to bring their projects to life.

Why Knot Fibers is a small hand-dyed yarn company out of Traverse City, Michigan

Kat Eldred is the founder and dyer behind Why Knot Fibers, a small hand-dyed yarn company specializing in rich nature inspired tonal colors, as well as farm-to-needle yarns and fibers. She began crocheting and knitting at at an early age, though she took a break in her teens before returning to yarn crafts in college. Kat has also been a musician most of her life, making music with friends and family and songwriting since age 12. Kat began dyeing after she took up spinning in her twenties and couldn’t find “just” the right colorway she wanted: Enter powdered turmeric and some alpaca roving, and the rest is the colors you see now see from WKF. Nearly a decade later, she is still playing with color, creating color, making music, spinning, and knitting in Traverse City, Michigan with her husband, Steve and their teens, Liam & Sadie (as well as 2 dogs and 3 cats - much to their annoyance, are NOT allowed in the studio). The business name came from a phrase that Kat says quite often “Sure! Why not?”

Intro to Gong-Fu Cha Class

This introductory class teaches the foundational skills of gong fu cha, the Chinese art of tea service. Learn how to brew tea using the classic steeping vessel, the gaiwan, and learn the techniques that prepare you to intuitively steep any tea that comes your way.

Originally developed 19-years ago by So-Han Fan, owner of West China Tea, this course aims to spread gong fu cha culture across the country.

Meet Your Facilitator:
Grant Kettering has taken several courses through West China tea’s education track. In addition to being certified in teaching Intro to Gong Fu Cha, they are also certified in Intermediate Tea Arts, a 10-week course led by Yao Yao.

They are invested in teaching this Intro course because this very course is where their gong fu cha journey began. What once began as a passing interest became a full time passion, and Grant has been hooked ever since!

Keenan Hand Dyed Yarns Trunk Show

The Firefly team is thrilled to welcome Keenan Hand Dyed Yarns to our space for a special Spring trunk show! Keenan Hand Dyed Yarns will be here for the entire month of April, culminating in a Local Yarn Store Day celebration with Deidre Darr herself, dyer behind Keenan Hand Dyed Yarns! We would love to have you join us!

About Deidre & Keenan Hand Dyed Yarns:

Keenan Hand Dyed Yarn started as Fangirl Hand Dyed Yarn in May 2018. My original plan was to dye yarn for myself and maybe a few friends. However, after playing around and developing my first color, Early Morning, I was hooked. I started selling at a local farmer’s market on a folding table with eight colorways.

Starting a business is pretty stressful and there’s a lot of stuff to learn. I didn’t have a lot of creativity left when I had to come up with yarn names. Color 1, Color 2, and so on seemed pretty boring. One day, while I was in the car - by myself - inspiration struck. I decided to name those first colors after songs by the band a-ha, best known for their 1985 hit “Take on Me”. Over the years, I've branched out and used names other than a-ha songs, but they still make it in there.

In September 2022, Fangirl re-branded to Keenan Hand Dyed Yarn. Keenan is a family name, and in particular, the name of our stillborn daughter. The decision to re-brand was tough and can be risky. My mom suggested Keenan immediately, but I didn’t want to do it. For a week my family threw out different names, but nothing fit. After a week of not finding the right name, my husband said, “What about Keenan?” We had a family meeting with our boys and asked them if they thought it was okay. They loved the idea. And so, Fangirl changed to Keenan.

My amazing niece, Maeve designed my adorable logo girl and named her Felice.
